First Ever National Hand Roll Day

National Hand Roll Day was founded in 2019 by Sushi Nozawa Group to celebrate the beloved sushi handroll. The holiday was proclaimed by the Registrar at National Day Calendar and is celebrated each year on July 6, the date of Chef Nozawa’s birthday!

Introduced in the middle of the last century, the original hand rolls, or temaki, were cylindrical in shape. Chef Nozawa began serving cylindrical handrolls early in his career in Japan, and decades later, they became a customer favorite at his namesake restaurant in Studio City. We believe that there’s something very special about the experience of eating temaki, which is why we serve temaki at Nozawa Bar, SUGARFISH, and, of course, KazuNori, where the handroll is the star.

The combination of our crispy nori, warm rice, and pristine fish will redefine what you think about hand rolls.”

To prepare the temaki, we begin with extraordinarily high-grade nori. Great nori provides a crucial crispness and flavor, resulting in a perfect balance of textures and flavors in each bite. Next, Nozawa’s signature warm, loose rice is added, followed by a generous portion of perfectly prepared fish.

Many of our guests clamor for our sweet blue crab rolls, while others are devoted to our velvety toro rolls. There are still those who love our scallop or our lobster roll. Whichever roll you choose, eating handrolls, with their crispy nori and delectable ingredients, is an experience to be savored.

Many cultures have a long culinary tradition of wrapping their food, and Japan’s version of wrapped food is sushi rolls, also known as maki. Maki comes in two main forms: makizushi (cut rolls), and temaki (hand rolls).
